The aims of this module are to examine the role of nutrients in individual health and the interaction between food and drugs and their effect on each other. You will undertake a systematic examination of the main nutrients relevant to human health and the ways in which they are absorbed, stored and metabolized by the body. You will also increase your knowledge of dietary sources and required intake levels, linking this to the conditions related to under - and over-nutrition. You will assess the impact of drugs on food metabolism, the effectiveness and safety of modern, traditional and herbal dietary supplements. The unit is a fundamental underpinning to much of the work undertaken in semester two.
